A shorter rail leaves a different amount of barrel exposed; a longer one needs enough clearance for the muzzle setup. Use the product dimensions as well as the nominal inch size.
Many options here use CNC aluminium, but their size and profile vary. The 9-inch MCMR-style option is listed at 245g; the 17-inch SAI-style option is listed at 701g. Consider how much weight you want at the front, not just whether the handguard is metal.
Leave enough space for your grip, torch switch and any other rail-mounted accessories. If your AEG stores its battery or wiring inside the handguard, check the internal space too. Accessory screws and mounting nuts must not press into the wiring or battery.
